Understanding the Differences and Finding the Right Fit

If you’ve ever searched for support in a tough season and care deeply about your faith, you’ve likely come across terms like Christian counseling, biblical counseling, and pastoral counseling. While they all seek to offer guidance and healing, they come from different perspectives and offer different types of support.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what each approach means and how to choose what’s right for you.

Christian Counseling with a Licensed Therapist

Christian counseling with a licensed therapist is professional mental health care provided by someone who is trained in evidence-based therapy and also integrates Christian faith into the process. This means you’re working with someone who is licensed—such as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Psychologist—and who has met rigorous educational (minimum of a Master’s degree), clinical, and ethical standards and is accountable to a state licensing board.

In Christian counseling, your therapist may include prayer, Scripture, or discussions about your relationship with God if that is what you desire. But they also draw on clinical tools like trauma-informed therapy, CBT, or mindfulness to address anxiety, grief, depression, and more. It’s a whole-person approach that respects both your faith and your mental health.

Biblical Counseling

Biblical counseling is typically provided by someone trained in theology or ministry rather than mental health. The foundation is the belief that the Bible is sufficient for addressing life’s challenges. Sessions focus on applying Scripture to your current struggles and growing in spiritual maturity. While many find deep encouragement through biblical counseling, it usually doesn’t involve clinical diagnosis or treatment plans, and the counselor may not be licensed.

Biblical counseling can be a powerful tool for spiritual formation and discipleship, but it may not meet the needs of those navigating trauma, mental illness, or more complex emotional experiences.

Pastoral Counseling

Pastoral counseling is support offered by a pastor or church leader, often someone who knows you personally. It may include prayer, listening, encouragement, and informal advice based on Scripture. Pastors are often the first people we turn to when we’re hurting. However, they may not have clinical training or the capacity for long-term mental health support. Pastoral counseling is often short-term and focused on spiritual care rather than mental health treatment.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

All three have value. Some people benefit from more than one approach at different times in their lives, and you are the only one who knows what you need in the current moment. You may want to ask yourself: what is at the root of what I’m dealing with right now? What kinds of symptoms am I experiencing? Do I want someone who already knows me, or someone who is a completely separate third party?

If you’re struggling with anxiety, trauma, stress, relationships, or life transitions—and want your Christian faith to be included in the healing process while also learning evidence based tools to help with your symptoms—then working with a licensed Christian counselor may be the best fit.
