When people hear the word trauma, they often think of emotional scars, painful memories, flashbacks, or anxiety. However, trauma doesn’t just live in your mind; it also lives in your body.

Research shows that people who have experienced significant emotional trauma are at higher risk for chronic health problems such as heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and even diabetes. In fact, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study found that individuals with four or more ACEs were 2.4 times more likely to develop heart disease. Trauma isn’t just a “mental health” issue—it’s a whole-body experience.

How Trauma Shows Up in the Body

When we go through something traumatizing or overwhelming, our nervous system reacts instantly—preparing us to fight, flight, or freeze. If we don’t get the chance to process or resolve that experience, our body stays on high alert. Over time, this constant stress can cause:

  • Chronic tension and pain (especially in the neck, shoulders, and back)

  • Digestive issues like IBS or stomach aches

  • Sleep problems and constant fatigue

  • Weakened immune system

  • Headaches or migraines

In other words… your body remembers, even if you try to forget.

A Story of How Trauma Can Hide in Plain Sight

When “Jane” (name changed for privacy) came to see me, she was convinced her main problem was physical. She’d been struggling with migraines, chronic stomach aches, and restless sleep for years. She’d seen multiple doctors, tried new diets, and even started daily meditation, but nothing seemed to work. She came to me after doctors recommended giving counseling a try.

During our sessions, she shared that she’d grown up in a household where arguments often escalated into shouting matches. She’d never thought of it as “trauma” because, as she put it, “That was just normal in my house.” But as we talked, she realized her body had been living in a constant state of readiness, or high alert, always bracing for the next conflict.

As we worked through her experiences, her physical symptoms began to shift. The migraines came less often. The stomach aches weren’t as intense. She still had stress in her life, but her body wasn’t stuck in fight-or-flight mode anymore.

Her story is not unusual; emotional wounds often echo through the body until we give them the care and attention they need.

Why This Connection Matters

If you’re dealing with unexplained health issues, it’s worth asking: Could unresolved emotional pain be part of the picture? This doesn’t mean it’s “all in your head.” It means your body is wise enough to signal when something deeper needs healing.

Healing from trauma isn’t just about feeling emotionally better, it’s about allowing your nervous system to reset so your body can thrive. Therapy, somatic practices, and supportive relationships can help shift both mind and body toward recovery.

You Don’t Have to Live Stuck in Survival Mode

If Jane’s story sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many people come to therapy because their body is sending signals that something isn’t right. The good news is healing is possible.

Our counselors are trained in evidence-based trauma therapies that address both the emotional and physical impact of your experiences. You deserve a life where your body feels safe again.
