Divorce is an event that will change all aspects of the family. Children may feel anger, confusion, and sadness as they adjust to their new reality. At Simplify Life, we incorporate traditional child counseling focuses by helping children develop emotional awareness, learn coping skills, and understand how to adjust to their new environment. We strive to help parents and children understand what emotions are trying to communicate and how to create new levels of stability and connection.
Understanding the Anger Behind Divorce
Anger is not just a form of “acting out”; rather, it is a tool that points to a child’s sense of safety, a need for an established routine, all of which often get disrupted quickly. Anger can be an outward expression of a deeper emotion such as grief, uncertainty, and even fear. Child development research points out that children will begin to thrive in environments where the adults can model healthy emotional regulation and provide consistent care.
Meanwhile, the parents are also dealing with their own stress, life transition, and healing process. This combination can make it feel overwhelming for the parents to respond to their own needs as well as the needs of their children. Supporting a child after divorce requires a blend of practical tools, emotional insight, and patience. When these are working together, children can feel seen, heard, and feel safe in the middle of such a large change.
What to Expect When Supporting an Angry Child
The main goal should be to create an emotionally safe space both within the counseling room and outside in the home. In the counseling space, children will learn to express their anger in healthier ways, begin to explore what deeper emotions are present, and learn how to build confidence in their ways to cope with change.
What Simplify Life Provides
- Emotion Identification and Coaching
We will teach children to learn how to identify and name their feelings, begin to understand them, and express them in a healthy way. This will help reduce the impact of emotional outbursts and increase emotional intelligence. - Parental Support & Guidance
We strive to provide parents with tools to respond calmly, validate emotions without reinforcing negative behaviors, and establish structure that offers their child stability. We also provide counseling to parents who are working through their own life transitions as well so that all parts of the family can receive care. - Building New Routines
Establishing new routines is beneficial in helping children reduce confusion and frustration. We help families with ideas to create spaces within their homes that offer a space of safety for the child. In addition, we help families come up with ideas to help the transition process from one home to another be smoother. - Communication Skills
We teach children and parents how to communicate through conflict, how to slow down emotionally, and how to repair after arguments. We understand that this process can feel challenging, and we strive to help build better connections. We will teach children to learn that they are not responsible for fixing the divorce, and help parents understand that they do not need to have all of the answers to best support their child.
It Isn’t About “Stopping the Anger”
Parents may come in hoping that counseling will “stop” the angry behavior. However, anger isn’t something that needs to be shut down, it is simply something that should be understood. Like with any emotion, anger is a communication tool that oftentimes points to a child’s unmet need. Healing happens when each person learns their role in creating an emotionally stable environment where all can feel heard and understood.
