At Simplify Life, we understand that finding the right mental health support can be challenging. However, you don’t have to take this step alone. Our experienced, compassionate team has built a reputation for providing trusted, evidence-based therapy services that help individuals and families thrive. Today, we’re delighted to introduce Anna Martirosyan, one of our dedicated counselors, whose expertise and empathy have helped many on their counseling journey. Anna’s compassionate approach and dedication to her clients make her an exceptional guide for personal growth. We asked Anna to answer a few questions so clients can get to know her better and understand what makes her such a trusted source of support on their journey.
What inspired you to become a counselor, and what do you find most rewarding about your work?
After a decade of working with students and families in school settings as a school counselor, I felt drawn to support students and families beyond the traditional 8–3 school day. Many of the most significant challenges emerge outside of school hours, and by working one-on-one with children and parents in an ongoing, therapeutic capacity, I value being able to offer a deeper level of continuity of care. This approach allows me to collaborate closely with pediatricians, school counselors, and the broader support network, linking arms with the entire village, to help students and families not just cope, but truly thrive.
What I find most rewarding is seeing clients reconnect with their strength, their voice, and their sense of hope.
Can you describe your counseling approach and what clients can expect during a session with you?
My counseling style is both empathetic and gently direct. While I’ve worked with countless clients, I treat each client uniquely and tailor each session to the client’s specific needs, honoring their experiences and worldview. I do not “fix” my clients nor resolve all of their concerns; instead, I educate and equip them with tools that they are then able to employ themselves. In our sessions, we focus on understanding what you’re experiencing, what triggers those sentiments, as well as how to alleviate the symptoms that are interfering with your life. I help clients develop practical tools to manage anxiety, regulate emotions, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and build healthier relationships.
What are some common misconceptions about therapy that you wish more people understood?
One of the common misconceptions about therapy is that talking about one’s problems will just make them worse. However, it is actually the opposite: the more we avoid our issues, the more power we give them. Therapy helps you process things in a way that reduces their intensity over time.
What are some of the most common issues you help clients with, and how do you approach these challenges?
I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, OCD, stress, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, and life transitions. I use evidence-based clinical tools to build resilience, employ coping skills, and reduce symptoms. I tailor therapy sessions to each client, recognizing that there is no one solution that works for all.
How do you stay updated with the latest developments in mental health and counseling practices?
I pride myself on being a lifelong learner, and am always reading the latest research or pursuing additional training to sharpen my skills. Although a specific number of training hours is required annually for therapists, I consistently exceed those requirements, as the industry standard expectations do not fully meet my own personal standard for professional growth.
What advice would you give to someone considering therapy for the first time?
Give it a try! Many of our clients share feelings of anxiety and nervousness prior to their first therapy session. “What if my therapist thinks I’m crazy?” “What if me feeling nervous means that I shouldn’t attend? After all, I was able to go without it for this long.”, etc. Unfortunately, those thoughts often act as defense mechanisms and are not always accurate. It is okay to feel nervous or even critical at first. In fact, that typically signals that you care, and it is a good sign.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work, and how do these activities influence your counseling style?
When not working, I LOVE to read, especially the classics! I think classic literature is universal and does an amazing job of portraying all the complexities of the human condition and experience, and, therefore, it will never lose its relevance. I also love spending time with my family and friends. I have two daughters (preschool and elementary) who keep my life pretty busy and exciting!
How do you measure progress and success in therapy, and what milestones do you celebrate with clients?
Progress looks different for everybody and is not always linear. In addition to the sole symptom reduction, we also measure success by the increased self-awareness and confidence, improved coping skills, healthier relationships, and stronger resilience. I let data from assessments, self-reports, and feedback from parents (for clients who are minors) determine the diagnosis, all of which I continue to use throughout therapy to determine progress. I want the clients to be able to point out the significant improvements that they are making by being able to point to changes in their anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, and other assessment scores. I also love being able to look at the steps my clients are able to take, both in and outside of therapy. Just like when hiking, it’s important to point out milestones on the way instead of only waiting until the summit to look and appreciate the view.
