Transitions are not always easy or fun. Most people resist change because it makes them uncomfortable or stretches them. As most of us know, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. How often do we do this? Most people that I meet with have this cycle of “insanity” in their lives daily. We keep trying, but things don’t necessarily get better.

One of my favorite quotes on change is:

“We change our behavior when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. Consequences give us the pain that motivates us to change.” – Henry Cloud

As a reminder that pain or being uncomfortable can actually be a gift, I want to give you a few key points to think about as you deal with your next transition, season, or change.

  1. You should expect to feel uncomfortable or even depressed and anxious. Change is not easy when it’s anticipated and unexpected changes increase the emotions you feel of sadness or fear.
  2. Recognize that things are changing and that this is a new phase of your life. Be honest with yourself. You might need to mourn the past and what is ending before you can wholeheartedly embrace what is lies ahead.
  3. Try to recognize the opportunities in front of you that may not have existed before. After you grieve what is ending, it helps to brainstorm and explore new options.
  4. Ask for help. It is important not to try and handle change exclusively on your own. Ask for support from those around you.  This involves seeking healthy community, engaging socially (instead of withdrawing), spending time with family and friends and seeking professional help if needed.
  5. Be kind to yourself. Have realistic expectations. Don’t expect yourself to be okay with all transitions and changes overnight. Allow time to process, grieve and explore options. Be patient and positive with yourself. If you feel that you are not adapting as you should, remember to ask for help from a supportive friend, family member or professional.  We are always glad to be apart of your team!
